YOGA AID WORLD CHALLENGE 2012

Sunday, Sept 9th / 8am-8pm, at the Yoga Barn, Ubud

The Yoga Aid World Challenge (YAWC) is the first-ever, one day, global yoga relay that unites the world’s yoga communities for the purpose of raising money for charity. Challengers fundraise for their favorite cause, then celebrate their efforts in special classes taking place in unique locations on 6 continents. The goal is to raise $1 Million for charity on this one day.

This is a gathering of Yoga, meditation, dance teachers and students from all over the island of Bali leading 108 Sun Salutations, Sound Healing, Thai Massage, Restorative, Yin, Iyengar, Anusara, Kundalini, Flying Yoga, Adults & Kids Yoga, Hoop Jam & Ecstatic Dance, MahaKirtan … and more!

All proceed will go to “Ayo Kita Bicara HIV and AIDS.”

AYO! Kita Bicara & AIDS was created by The BaliSpirit Festival to engage the local community—specifically the Balinese youth—in conversations and education about HIV & AIDS at the grassroots level. The program supports teenagers as Agents of Change within Indonesia and the nation’s greatest hope to slow the spread of HIV & AIDS. This community-based program encourages trust and openness within the community; teenagers are motivated to talk openly about AIDS and to take action to help prevent its spread. In its inaugural year, the program achieved all of its outreach goals to target high-risk youth populations—high school-aged children from the areas in Bali with the highest rate of HIV infection.

Surya Namaskara, known in English as ‘Sun Salutation’ is a common sequence of hatha yoga asanas. It’s origins lie in a worship of Surya, the Hindu solar deity. The physical base of the practice links together twelve asanas in a dynamic performed series. These asanas are ordered so that they alternately stretch the spine backwards and forwards. Proponents of the use of Surya Namaskara prefer to perform it at sunrise, considered to be the most ‘spiritually’ favorable time of the day.

11:30 am – Ecstatic Dance: Tanya Kaps (Canada)

A non-verbal, come-as-you-are, happy space where inhibitions melt away. Powerful music from a variety of genres inspires free form dance with minimal instruction. Come celebrate life on the dance floor!

11:30 am – Hoop Jam with Sparks and friends

Come one, come all! To the first ever Hoop Jam in support of The Yoga Aid Challenge in Bali!🙂 This is a chance to hula hoop with friends immersed in nature. Bring your hoop(s) if you have any. We’ll jam to tunes played by Tanya Kaps and share in the joy of being a kid again! All are welcome!

11:30 am – Thai Yoga Massage: Arnaud L’Hermitte (France)

Explore the therapeutics of Thai massage and Osteopathy to approach the common disorders that occur from spinal malfunction. Simple, creative approaches with a Zen focus will bring back a healthy spine that results in completely free, unhindered movement.

2:00 pm – Yin Yoga: Denise Payne (USA)

Yin yoga allows us to reach into the deeper tissue in the body, to find a new openness within. New depths in postures, deeper ranges of motion, or an increased flow of energy may only be achievable by focusing on these deeper tissues. This practice usually consists of long held, seated forward folds, and is a perfect compliment and balance to more yang types of yoga.

Iyengar Yoga for Enlightenment of Being
A combination of Iyengar and Astanga yoga blended together to create a pure style of practice for everyone regardless of fitness level. Beautiful traditional yoga poses help and enable maintenance of a balanced lifestyle in a hectic world. In this class we practice Yoga Asana together with breath work. Techniques are learned to allow the flow of energy and thoughts through the body and mind without allowing distractions. You will also build strength, tone your mind and muscles, increase your flexibility and develop mechanisms for coping with life’s ebb and flow.

2:00 pm – Flying Yoga: Carlos Romero (Venezuela)

Flying yoga is a playful practice inspired by Acroyoga. It is a practice of sharing love, trust and kindness. A journey of giving and receiving, it develops a set of skills to take your practice to a deeper level of connection with yourself and those around. Flying Yoga combines elements of asana sequences, partner yoga, assisted inversions, basic partner acrobatics, therapeutic flying and the sacred dance of Thai massage. No prior acrobatics experience or partner needed.

2:30 pm – Adult & Kids Yoga: Noga Weiss (Israel) & Lindsey Wise (USA)

In this Parents & Kids Yoga Workshop we’ll enjoy Yoga games combined with Asanas, we’ll stretch, balance and relax together and find our Yogi inner-child. Get new ideas to combine Yoga into daily routine with the whole family in a fun way. Fun for parents (please, no pembantu…) and kids, no previous experience needed … Prepare for some open minded Yoga.

4:00pm – Restorative Yoga: Anna Kolacny (USA)

Restorative yoga is a deeply relaxing practice. It focuses on bringing the body into a comfortable position supported by an array of props including bolsters, blankets, straps and blocks allowing the body to passively open and release stored tension. The class creates a soothing atmosphere conducive to unwinding and releasing physical, psychological and emotional tension. Soothing and well-supported poses offer us the opportunity to linger quietly for a few moments and savor the simple sweetness of life.

Come and discover the ancient form of devotional chanting where sweet vibrations open your heart to bliss and ecstasy.
Kirtan is a form of devotional chanting whose roots go back over number of thousand years to India. It is a form of Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion) and has the power to open the heart. The singing is accompanied by musical instruments and rhythmic drumming and the audience are encouraged to participate by chanting, clapping and dancing. You will not be able to resist the urge to join in!
